Are you using the same Apple ID you used to download the OS originally? If this is a used computer and the previous owner installed the current OS, you will need to boot into Internet Recovery (command - option/alt - R on a restart) and install the OS the computer shipped with. Make sure you have at least 2 backups before doing anything.
